Talking Hawks MVP: Round 11

A week is a long time in football, or so the saying goes. After falling at the final hurdle against Port Adelaide in Round 10, the Mighty Hawks withstood a third quarter blitz from the Brisbane Lions before putting on the afterburners and running out convincing 25 point winners at Marvel Stadium, in a game that showed the confidence and belief is starting to build in the young group.

3 – Massimo D’Ambrosio

27 disposals for the Point Cook Precisionist, which resulted in seven score involvements and nearly 600 metres gained. Took a massive contested mark in the first quarter and in the third quarter he kept trying to take the game on against the Lions momentum.

2- Sam Frost

Gave Joe Daniher a bath today! Frosty continued on his rich vein of form in defence, with excellent body work and lion hearted attack on the ball. Had a few moments of Frostball that ended in a carefully executed delivery of the ball to a Hawthorn team mate.

1- Jack Gunston

After being managed last week, Gunners returned to the team with a defensive role to play on Harris Andrews. Gunners used his body well to stop Andrews being able to impact the play, while being an important part of our scoring, with eight score involvements and four goals on the day.

3 – Will Day

Another outstanding performance by Daysy, his composure with ball in hand, drawing opponents to free up his teammates was absolutely selfless. 26 disposals going at 88% along with six tackles and a team high nine score involvements earnt him three from me.

2- Massimo D’Ambrosio

Massimo’s best game since his Hawthorn debut, he had 27 disposals with 588m gained including seven score involvements. Ten pressure acts including a goal saving spoil, he worked just as hard defensively as he did offensively.

1 – Jack Gunston

Another selfless role for the Hawks played by Gunners, nullifying Harris Andrews impact of the game and making him accountable with eight score involvements including four goals of his own turning back the clock.

3 – Karl Amon

Amon’s reliable boot delivered with 633 meters gained performance and ensured 26 of his 29 disposals hit it’s target.

With a major responsibility to move the ball by foot out of defence, it’s can be easy to overlook the luxury that we now in Karl to maintain possession when he holds the ball.  What a weapon he has in that left boot.

2- Sam Frost

With the common task of giving up inches, Frosty was at home being Mr Reliable as he thwarted his opponents, helped teammates and took the points against Joe Daniher across the afternoon.

With some big fists, a memorable dashing run (which I wish he got the handball receive back), tussling and keeping an eye on the last line of defense, Frost was a great leader in defence.

1 – Mabior Chol

Equalling his season best with the Hawks Chol kicked three majors from three shots at goal, to add to four score involvements.

Chol’s pressure as a tall forward was important, and he contributed 16 pressure acts and applied six tackles.  When Mabior is up and about, the Hawks look good.

3- James Worpel

With the whole midfield group firing, it was Worpel who came out on top for me. He was so damaging that the commentators were even questioning if the Lions should tag him.

A massive 13 contested possessions from his 28 disposals as well as eight inside 50s to go along with his eight score involvements.

When you’re in competition for the best midfielder on the day with a two time Brownlow medalist you know you’re doing something right.

2- Will Day

Another week, another few votes for Daysy. He just makes the midfield so much more damaging. Hawks going from 18th in scores from clearance differential in rounds 1-8 to third in rounds 9-11, is not a coincidence and lines up with this one man returning.

He is a midfielder that works as hard defensively as he does when the team is attacking, shown with his six tackles and nine score involvements. 88% disposal efficiency is also elite for a man playing in the guts.

1 – Jack Gunston

With four goals and a role on Harris Andrews that saw the Brisbane defender have limited impact on the game, I couldn’t go past giving votes to Gunners.

He was influential, getting involved up the ground as well. I wonder if Brisbane had any regrets from moving him on for so cheap…?

3 – James Worpel

28 disposals and 13 contested possessions is pretty good in and of itself, but when you add in a team high nine clearances, eight score involvements, eight inside 50s (another team high) 457 metres gained, Worpel was the driving force in the middle and a load of his teammates worked off him and his work around the footy.

2 – Karl Amon

Since moving to defence, Karl Amon has become the quintessential deep lying playmaker for the Hawks, using his lethal left boot to spray the ball to teammates all over the field.

29 disposals and 11 marks (both team highs) represents a good day on its own, but when you then add in the fact he went at 90% efficiency, gained a team high 633m, had 11 rebounds, five score involvements, and laid four tackles, I couldn’t not give him some more recognition.

1 – Mabior Chol

The Chol doubters seem pretty quiet now. He laid an equal team high six tackles, kicked three goals, took four marks, and was absolutely crucial to forcing turnovers in the front half with his pressure in the forward 50.

An excellent performance from a player who is proving to be the antithesis of lazy.

Gunston, Ginivan, Sicily, Day, D’Ambrosio, and Newcombe can all consider themselves unlucky.

3 – Jack Gunston

Vintage performance against his former teammates. Kicked four with some solid forward craft and helped curb Harris Andrews influence. Easily his best performance since returning as he winds back the clock in style!

2 – James Worpel

Back to his best in the middle was the Worpedo. It’s amazing how much better the entire midfield looks with Will Day back in the side, and Worpel is one of the beneficiaries.

Day was very good in his own right but Worpel was the pick of the bunch for me, he is a contested beast and strong at the coal face!

1 – James Sicily

Literally five to six players that could’ve featured this week but I’ve given the last vote to the skipper! Strong performance in the back half and a welcome return to the side! His stats aren’t phenomenal, but I thought he was solid all day.

Frost, Amon, Day, D’Ambrosio, Ginnivan and Chol all could’ve polled this week and all are a bit unlucky.
