Talking Hawks MVP: Round 3

In our traditional Easter Monday clash, the young Hawthorn team fought valiantly in a game that included many memorable moments including a 40 minute weather delay, but ultimately went down to the Geelong Cats by 36 points in front of a crowd of just over 67,000.

Tim’s Votes

3. James Worpel

The Worpedo continued his great form, leading the midfield with aplomb, on his way to receiving the Paul Dear Medal for Best on Ground for Hawthorn.

2. Lloyd Meek

Meeky made his presence known in the centre square, amassing 42 hit outs, 16 disposals and having seven score involvements.

1. Sam Frost

Frosty continued his excellent for in Season 2024 with 17 touches, two contested marks and was a standout in our backline against a strong Geelong team.

3. James Worpel

36 disposals, nine inside 50’s, eight tackles, eight score involvements, 838 metres gained, six clearances and 21 pressure acts.

One of the midfield cogs that’s working.

Could win a second best and fairest at 25 years old. Insane start to the season.

2. Lloyd Meek

The commentary fawned over Toby Conway but the Hawks new number one ruck was better than no slouch.

16 disposals from a ruckman is a tick, 42 hitouts from 70 contests is a tick and when the Hawks came into this game with a -18 centre clearance differential and a -21 clearance differential, those numbers were a net positive for the Hawks.

+14 in clearances and even in centre clearances (13 each).

The biggest tick for Lloyd though; 7 score involvements.

Ned Reeves had had four in the previous fortnight combined.

Lloyd’s number one for the near future.

1. Sam Frost

If there was a checklist for what we want from Frosty, he ticked them with aggressive force.

17 disposals, 12 of them were intercepts, 11 pressure acts, eight contested possessions, seven marks and zero free kicks against.

Hawkins kicked four but two of them were entries that Matty Scarlett couldn’t have stopped, Hawk beat him in a genuine one-on-one and got a gimme from Jeremy Cameron.

Frosty right now is in the form of his life and even kicking the ball well (254 metres gained).

3. James Worpel

I don’t need to add anything to the above. Should be getting votes (plural) on Brownlow night.

2. Connor Nash

The Meath Menace has started the season slowly, but came back with a bang. In conditions which probably reminded him of home, he had 24 disposals at 71%, nearly 300 metres gained, a team high 9 tackles, a team high 9 clearances, 4 inside 50s, and a number of smart little handballs, taps, and blocks to put his teammates into space. When someone shows you what they can do (as he did last year), believe them.

1. Sam Frost

Mabior Chol and Lloyd Meek can consider themselves stiff here. However, Frost was superb defensively, forcing Hawkins wide and rarely losing one on one, despite the 350 gamer kicking 4 on the day. 17 disposals at 88%, 12 intercepts, 7 marks (2 contested), 3 one-percenters. Excellent game and a great display of his defensive talent, which has always been undeniable.

3. James Worpel

The best player on Easter Monday. Doing it all around the ground and finding a way to get the ball inside 50. Enormous 838 meters gained. Everyone wanted to see PCM James Worpel form again and right now he’s so far in front it’s not even funny.

2. Lloyd Meek

Complete dominance in the ruck position with 14 hitouts to advantage, 4 more than Reeves across his 2 games and 7 more than all Geelong rucks combined. But was also able to make himself a threat around the ground as well.

1. Sam Frost

No longer the whipping boy of this side. Has shown up this season and has cemented himself as an instrumental part of this backline. Even his biggest detractors wouldn’t have much to criticise about his current form. Tied for the most intercept possessions on the ground.

3. James Worpel

His shoulders must be getting sore carrying the weight of the team on his back.  Has started the year on fire, let’s hope Worps can keep producing these performances week in week out.

2. Connor Nash

The Big Bodied Beast is back! Nash found plenty of ball today, but it was his work off the ball that was most impressive. Leading the tackle count with nine, but continually blocking and shepherding teammates with six score involvements the cream on top.

1. Sam Frost

Played a phenomenal first half, backing himself in and winning contest after contest when the heat was on. While not high on ranking points for the game, I felt he was invaluable in a backline under siege.

3. James Worpel

Easily the best player on the day, with 36 disposals, 14 contested possessions, 838 metres gained, 6 clearances and a beautiful goal. The Hawks midfield has had a disappointing start to 2024 but Worpel has been the true exception to that, he is in career best form to start the year!

2. Connor Nash

A welcome return to form from the Irishman! Hasn’t had his best start to the year but was solid in the midfield with 24 disposals, 9 tackles, 14 contested possessions and 9 clearances.

1. Lloyd Meek

The last vote could have gone to a few players but I have gone with Meek as I was very impressed with his performance, even after the rain came which isn’t conducive to big men. Reeves is obviously a better tap ruckmen but Meek is far better around the ground and offers more overall for me! Led the way with 42 hitouts and will only improve from here.
