Talking Hawks MVP: Round 2

In our first home game for the 2024 Season, in front of just shy of 44,000 fans, the Hawks started off slowly, rallied but ultimately were put away by 55 points against a rampant Melbourne side.

3. James Worpel

Equal leading disposal getter, was the clear stand out from our midfield on a rather dirty day for the group and never stopped trying.

2. Mabior Chol

Led the tackles count with 5, showed hunger to be involved in the contest and had 2 goal assists out of our 5 goals.

1. Jack Ginnivan

Love the way that he is getting involved in the game with his ability to make contests and then help set up other scoring chains.

3. Jack Scrimshaw

Stood up in big moments and was one of a couple to barely lose a one-on-one contest. Had nine intercept possessions, eight rebounds and eight contested possessions. The feedback from Sam Mitchell last season has worked. Scrim looks fantastic.

2. James Worpel

The midfield got absolutely smacked but the Worpedo was everywhere. 27 disposals with a 6-8-6-7 disposal split is nice and consistent. Had a game-high nine inside 50’s and was third for metres gained at the Hawks as well.

1. Josh Weddle

The Weddler kicked a beautiful snag, had 21 touches and took 10 marks. Didn’t touch the footy in the last quarter though. Come on Weddler, you’re better than that. My goodness he was good though.

3. James Worpel

27 disposals, 9 inside 50s (both team highs), 4 tackles (only Mabior Chol with 5 had more), and 3 clearances (only Conor Nash with 5 had more for the Hawks). Only mid who really strung something resembling 4 quarters together.

2. Jack Scrimshaw

26 disposals at 92%, 9 intercepts, 9 marks, 8 rebounds. Gave everything and did a good job defensively as part of a busy backline. Smart distribution as well, not his fault that teammates proceeded to turn the ball over.

1. Josh Weddle

21 disposals and 10 marks. Don’t need to say much more than that. He actually tried to get us moving forward and had one of his better defensive performances.

3. James Sicily

Our captain bounced back after a false start to the season. Started very well and helped to stem the bleeding, score line would’ve looked a lot uglier without him.

2. James Worpel

Once again our best midfielder. Leading pressure acts getter on the ground. Liking the consistency from him so far this year.

1. Jack Scrimshaw

Improved his attacking and defensive game this week. 26 disposals at 92% disposal efficiency was a standout in a game rife with turnovers from the Hawks boys.

3. James Worpel

In a midfield that was comprehensively beaten on the day, can hold his head high as one of few Hawks who performed in all four quarters.

2. Jack Scrimshaw

Competed hard all day, Scrimshaw was ultra reliable with ball in hand and prevented the dam wall from busting open, helping to restrict the Dees to under 100 points.

1. Josh Weddle

Josh was one of our more creative players on the day, while also being defensively accountable. Managed to sneak forward and hit the scoreboard showing his versatility.
