Talking Hawks MVP: Round 12

  1. Jack Ginnivan – With few players standing out on the night, I thought Ginnivan once again rose to the occasion of playing against his old side. Started hot and finished with three goals and 31 disposals. An admirable effort to get back into this sort of form after being dropped earlier this season.
  1. Tom Barrass – I thought Barrass was a player who performed better than what his stats reflected, which can’t be said about many others. He led one percenters with eight, as well as racking up seven intercept possessions (including three intercept marks). Was a pillar down back with seven spoils and helped to stop the margin getting past ten goals.
  1. Conor Nash – Good to see Nashy have one of his better games since the return from his suspension. Lead the clearances statistic with nine and was able to gather 14 contested possessions from his 25 disposals. Was our best mid on the night and one of few that can hold their head high after that performance.

  1. Jack Ginnivan – Ginni rose to the occasion against his old mob and he did not disappoint! Pulling midfield numbers playing a regular forward role, he amassed 31 disposals, with six score involvements including three majors himself. In what was a dull night for Hawthorn, Jack was easily our brightest shining light.
  1. Josh Ward – Josh was one of few who can hold their head high after the loss to the Pies. Wardy played a genuine four quarter game racking up 26 disposals at 77% DE, 20 pressure acts (including 3 tackles) in what was a  tough night at the office.
  1. Jack Gunston – Ageing like a fine wine, Gunners played with heart and soul. Despite limited opportunity down forward, Jack showed his class with a huge contested mark on the goal line against three Pies defenders. He finished with a quarter of Hawthorn’s goals, once again reminding us how important he is to our club.

  1. Jack Ginnivan – Ginni continued his rich vein of form against his old side on Friday night, finishing with an equal career-high 31 disposals alongside a hat-trick of goals – all of which he kicked in the first half. Splitting his time between the midfield and forward line in his 100 minutes of play, the 22 year-old was clearly the standout for the Hawks as he continues to display how beneficial his week stint in the VFL was.
  1. Conor Nash – In his second game back from suspension, Conor Nash put together a strong shift for a midfield brigade that was otherwise strongly beaten. In a touch over 70% gametime, Nash offered his trademark bash-and-crash style on the way to 25 disposals and a game-high nine clearances. In a match where the likes of Worpel, Newcombe and D’Ambrosio were below their best, it was Nash that attempted to uphold a semblance of competitiveness in the middle.
  1. Josh Ward – Though his impact/disposal was at times lacking, highlighted by his three score-involvements, Josh Ward continued to strengthen his position in Hawthorn’s best side. Ending with a season-high of 26 disposals (eleven kicks, 15 handballs), Ward applied himself both on the inside and outside against the Pies and would be one of few who could leave holding their head high.

3. Jack Ginnivan – Easily the most impactful player for Hawthorn. Ginni kicked three against his old side, all within the first half, and finished the night with 31 disposals. He was also one of the 17 players who managed to lay a tackle which puts him in good stead. Adding to his stat sheet were the 418 metres gained, having spent some time in the midfield, it was his best performance for the year – shame it had to come in such a disappointing loss.

2. Conor Nash – Nash gets two votes this week, finding a bit of form after last week’s poor performance returning from a lengthy suspension. Disappointed he only managed to lay three tackles, given he’d averaged seven from the three games prior. Still, he managed to work hard and make some impact, leading the stat sheet for clearances (nine). Finished the night with 25 disposals so all-in-all a respectable showing from the Irishman.

1. Lloyd Meek – I had originally thought to give a point to Josh Ward, who had a couple flashes of brilliance on Friday night, but unfortunately for him I changed my mind and decided to give it to Meeky. Our ruckman worked hard, battling against Darcy Cameron, and managed to win the hit outs, with 37 for the night. He also registered six clearances, tying second with Jack Crisp and Cameron in that metric. He also put himself in a bit of trouble, landing a massive spoil against Pat Lipinksi, and was reported. Thankfully he got off, but in a game was the equal highest tackler (notching four alongside James Worpel) his desperation and attack counts as a silver lining.

Final Votes

Jack Ginnivan – 12
